The warped corner of cyberspace once inhabited by the Internet's alternative sailboat discussion newsgroup, "On-sailing'Net-today", a harbour for the Internet's strangest collection of emailing frauds, failures, wannabes, egomaniacs, trolls and even one or two odd sailors. Reality, in the form of a ruinous sailboat and its ruined owner, obtrudes only briefly, at the beginning of each Act and at the very end. There is one glimpse, at the start, of the mundane lives most participants lead beyond the Internet. Apart from a brief visit to a virtual sailboat saloon in Act 2 Scene 1, the action takes place in a Dali-esque cyberspace with a sailboat emphasis. Participants wear a strange mix of their own fantasised sailing clothes and accessories while playing their newsgroup roles, but all carry at least some computer paraphernalia about them. As this is an email newsgroup, participants drift in and out. Sometimes
everybody's attention is focussed on the central thread. Sometimes no-one
but the principals are paying attention. There may be quite extraneous, unrelated,
and even distracting activities going on in the background. Time: Opens in the Present, rapidly switching back to mid-1990s, the dim past of the Internet, as the Internet craze starts gathering momentum and more and more innocents unwisely seek knowledge, enlightenment and truth on the 'Net. At the very last, once more in the Present. |
